Railings forthe county town
The county town
Railings on the street, privacy behind
Hertford's Georgian and later streets often want railings on the front and closeboard behind. A suburban panel on a townhouse frontage is the wrong sentence.
We would rather specify a quieter railing and rebuild tired piers than force overlap boards onto a street that still has a period language. Bengeo plots can be sloping; the river meadows ask for posts and gravel boards that understand wet ground.
Conservation judgement matters on the older streets. Height, character, and the neighbour's reverse face all sit in the same survey.

Frontage, rear, and the meadows
-
/01
Frontage railings
Powder-coated bars, rebuilt piers, and heights that belong on a county-town street rather than a closeboard wall to the pavement.
-
/02
Rear closeboard
Featheredge privacy behind the house, with a finished reverse face — the usual language once you are off the street.

/03
Wet-ground posts
Gravel boards and post spec for Bengeo slopes and meadow edges, so the timber is not sitting in the water table.
Period streets and planning height
Hertfordclients
They understood that a St Albans terrace needed closeboard, not a thin panel. The survey was unhurried and the reverse face is as considered as the garden side.
Our Cassiobury composite fence was specified properly — aluminium posts, a grain that still looks like timber. No hard sell on extras we did not need.

County-town questions — when railings belong, how we treat Bengeo slopes, and whether we cover Ware from the same visit pattern.
Service coverage
County town streets and Bengeo
Hertford surveys cover the Georgian and later streets, Bengeo, Sele Farm, Hertingfordbury, and across to Ware. Frontages often want railings; rear gardens want closeboard; river-meadow plots want posts that understand wet ground.
We regularly work in Hertford, Bengeo, Hertingfordbury, Sele Farm, and Ware, and nearby villages throughout the Hertford area.
