Garden fence panels specified properly
Overlap and lap panels still have a place — when posts, gravel boards, and heights are specified for the ground, not bought off a pallet.
Garden panels are the volume language of Hertfordshire fencing: overlap lap, waney-edge, and framed panels that replace a tired run without a full closeboard rebuild. Done poorly they rack, rot at the gravel line, and look thin. Done properly they are a calm, affordable boundary.
We still survey. Posts in Hertfordshire clay, concrete gravel boards, and a cap that sheds water matter more than the panel pattern. If you need more privacy or a longer life, we will say so and point you to [closeboard](/services/closeboard-fencing/) or [composite](/services/composite-fencing/).

What our clientssay
They understood that a St Albans terrace needed closeboard, not a thin panel. The survey was unhurried and the reverse face is as considered as the garden side.
Our Cassiobury composite fence was specified properly — aluminium posts, a grain that still looks like timber. No hard sell on extras we did not need.
Horizontal slats instead of a suburban overlap panel. It sits with the house. Communication through the install was excellent.
The railings on the frontage look as if they have always been there. They rebuilt the piers rather than pretending the old masonry would last.
